Yet another post on Aljunied
This essay, in Chinese, makes a few good points about the supposed dilemma in Aljunied. A selection of the main points:
- While the WP team and the PAP team may be equal in their abilities, the big difference is that the PAP team cannot honestly fight for their constituents’ interests in Parliament should these interests conflict with the PAP’s directives. History has shown that PAP MPs have very strong party discipline. Even if they disagree with a certain policy, no PAP MP has ever resigned his/her position in protest. Just look at Lim Boon Heng.
- The WP team has better racial representation.
- Going by the historical fates of Eunos GRC and Cheng San GRC, there’s a good chance that if the PAP wins Aljunied, it will not exist in the next elections.
The author also argues that the introduction of the casinos, which came under George Yeo’s time as Minister of Trade and Industry, shows that Yeo is willing to ignore his own principles in order to toe the party line. But I’m not sure the example supports what he claims, since other sources suggest that Yeo was one of the strongest supporters of the casino proposal.
The author could have used the argument also for other MPs such as Lim Boon Heng
