Comparison of Manifestos

This summary of the manifestos of the various parties comes from the ST. Not exactly the most unbiased source, one might say. Nevertheless, even from that, one can see how much more substantive the non-PAP manifestos are compared to the PAP manifesto. The failings of the latter have already been remarked on substantively elsewhere.

I don’t get it. The PAP, more than any other party, has access to the relevant statistics and so on to write a substantive manifesto. Yet they chose not to. As someone else has pointed out, this may be the first election where the PAP is the party relying on high-falutin’ rhetoric instead of focusing on bread-and-butter issues. Is it because they do not want to admit that those problems exist, since doing so would ruin their good ‘track record’? But this is surely only a temporary solution. If they offer no solutions to these problems, then the issues will only become more urgent in the next elections, and they will be forced to retreat further into the realm of high-falutin’ rhetoric. The competition from China and other developing economies for the low-value jobs that helped Singapore to develop in the 1970s and 80s is only going to get more intense.

I actually came across some comments on the internet that it is always ‘easier’ for non-PAP candidates to offer concrete proposals. These were in defence of (who else) Tin Pei Ling. Bullshit. This election at least, only non-PAP candidates are offering substantive proposals because the PAP does not have anything new to propose. The PAP’s argument is basically ‘we brought you prosperity, therefore we are the best candidates to continue to bring you prosperity’. Even if you grant their premise (which is far from uncontroversial as it blithely credits the PAP with the achievements of the civil service and other workers), it’s not clear that what worked in the past is going to work in the future. If the PAP thinks that their old industrial strategy will continue to work in the future, they ought to argue for that in their manifesto. More words, fewer pictures, please.

Well, as a reference, the PAP was mostly talking about James Gomez in the last elections. The election before it was Chee Soon Juan. And the election before that was Tang Liang Hong.
